Dee Carson, June Artist at the Amherst Town Library
Growing up in the very artistic Cronin household, I picked up a few tips along the way. Later, I participated in classes at the Wyman School of Art and took art history and art appreciation at the University of Maine Orono. After retiring from teaching modern languages, I began painting with acrylics and watercolors. Recently, I’ve had solo shows and participated in gallery events in Sarasota, Bradenton, and Venice, FL. I now have many watercolor pieces at several shops and galleries near Amherst, as well as online. I appreciate all kinds of art. Coming from parents who were/are incredible designers and watercolorists, I’ve always liked trying out my version of landscapes and a still life once in a while. It’s all about nature, ever-changing and fascinating!

BIO
“If Joni Mitchell and Richie Havens had a love child, with Rodney Dangerfield as the midwife, the results might have been something close to the great Vance Gilbert.” As the above quote from Richmond magazine suggests, Vance Gilbert defies stereotypes. It’s little wonder then that he also exceeds expectations. In this case, those two qualities go hand in hand. “I’m black, I sing, I play an acoustic guitar, and I don’t play the blues,” Gilbert insists. That may be a broad statement, but it rings with truth.
What he does do is make memorable music, as evidenced by the 13 albums he’s released so far, as well as the mark he’s made on the folk and acoustic music scenes in general. Over the course of a prolific career that extends back to the early ’90s, he’s recorded with
his good friend Ellis Paul and shared stages worldwide with Aretha Franklin, Shawn Colvin, Arlo Guthrie, the Milk Carton Kids, George Carlin (150+ shows), Anita stages worldwide with Aretha Franklin, Shawn Colvin, Arlo Guthrie, the Milk Carton Kids, George Carlin (150+ shows), Anita Baker, the Subdudes, Paul Reiser and any number of others.
He’s also made a prominent presence at some of the world’s most prestigious gatherings, among them the Newport, Winnipeg, Rocky Mountain, Calgary, Ottawa, and Falcon Ridge folk festivals, the Kate Wolf Music Festival, and Australia’s Woodford Folk Festival and Mullum Music Festival. “There was also that one nude festival in Maryland,” Gilbert recalls. “I don’t recall the name of that one, but I have to admit that the name wasn’t the first thing I would remember.”
Naturally, Gilbert can be forgiven for that minor oversight, given the amount of praise he’s received from the pundits. His remarkable rapport with his audiences and his free spirited performances inspired one critic to hail him as “a folkie trapped in a vaudevillian body,” with “a voice that could have been on the opera stage, a wit that could have been on a comedy stage and a songwriting talent that’s thrust him on the folk stage for decades.” Continue reading at https://vancegilbert.com/bio/

Color, Collaboration and Creativity at the Amherst Town Library’s Student Art Show
On Saturday May 6th the Friends of the Amherst Town Library welcomed nearly 600 Mont Vernon and Amherst community members to the opening reception of the 2023 Student Art Show.
Students from all SAU39 schools were represented in this exhibit, with nearly 450 art pieces on display throughout the library. Types of art included paintings, drawings, digital art, photography, pottery, print making and mixed media. An avant-garde bustier dress, created by an Amherst Middle School student with found objects, stood between colorful paintings by elementary students from Mont Vernon Village and Wilkins Schools and a Souhegan High School senior’s portfolio of 101 watercolor sketches.
Attracting a lot of attention from this year’s event attendees was the coral reef mural encompassing one large wall in the children’s area. This collaborative and colorful project included ocean creatures designed by students in grades K and 1 at Mont Vernon, Clark and Wilkins Schools, and included an I Spy feature.
The Friends of the Amherst Town Library is an all-volunteer organization supporting the library by supplying museum passes and other program needs, decorating for the holidays, showcasing artists monthly and providing community connection through this annual student art show. This project was accomplished in conjunction with the tireless efforts, creativity and enthusiasm of SAU39’s art teachers, many of whom attended the reception to celebrate with their students.
The artwork will remain on display at the Amherst Town Library through May 25th.
